I just came back from a seminar in Atlanta this past weekend that focused on internet marketing.  Several fantastic speakers talked about using social media for the marketing of your business and a light bulb went off in my head – I can use this information to make a difference in the community where I live.

I live in a rural part of Florida in Suwannee County and have noticed that many young women repeat the cycle of their surroundings.  They drop out of school and get pregnant – that’s it.  Unfortunately, the economy is making this scenario worse in that the jobs that some of these women were able to get, they no longer have due to being laid off.   Most of the women don’t work – they rely on government assistance which seems to be a cycle difficult to break.

It doesn’t have to be this way.  If we can reach just one young woman and get her started with her own online business to take care of her family and support herself, we may have a domino effect.   It must be understood that there is “work” involved in building a business – it doesn’t happen by itself.  No one is going to magically build it for you and say – here you go.  Besides, it wouldn’t be appreciated since no sweat and tears went into building the business.

I just checked some stats on Suwannee County Florida and it advises that 75% of the kids graduate from high school.  Not sure if that is a valid number or not, but I can tell you that many kids my daughter started high school with in 8th grade are no longer in school in 11th grade because they’ve dropped out for one reason or another.  It’s 2009 – why does this continue to happen over and over again?

The really sad part?  Most of the kids that drop out sit at home and do absolutely NOTHING all day long.  Nothing.   Why?  Because they have no means of getting anywhere, no computer to continue their education and many do not have phones in their homes.  To me, that’s a waste of a future.

The kids drop out for various reasons including pregnancy, suspension, and boredom.  Many people tend to believe that kids should be celibate and the local school only teaches abstinence.  Unfortunately, that’s not practical and doesn’t provide kids with the information they may need to protect themselves not only from pregnancy but also from disease.

These kids and young women need help but with the economy the way it is social services are being cut further and further.  What to do?  All of us need to stand up and help these women and try to break the cycle.  Personally, I am offering to mentor young women in my area.  Simply email me at denise@usapooltoy.com and tell me about you and your circumstances.   It is important to note that I will not do the work for you but will be available to listen and guide to help you either become a business owner like myself or help you prepare for a job in the near future.

As I was raising my children, I always visualized a way for me to be able to run a business from home.  I always loved my career but I wanted to figure out a way to be able to raise my 2 girls while creating a business.   My eldest daughter is now a junior at FSU in Tallahassee and my youngest daughter is a junior at the local high school here in North Florida and yes, I now run my own business from my home.

The quickest way to go from 0 to profitable is by focusing on a niche product.  What is a niche product?  A niche product is a product specifically targeting a small market.  Examples are wedding favors in the monstrous wedding industry; men’s jewelry in the jewelry category; children’s golf clubs in the golf club category.

How can you locate a niche product to create your business around?  You do niche market research.  The simplest way to begin is to go to Google Keyword Tool and enter the most basic term to see what other keywords come up.  If you are interested in the toy market, enter toys as the main keyword to start your search.  You’re specifically looking for a keyword that generates at least 500 visits with low competition.   In this example, we find 30,400,000 searches for the keyword toy.  We know that keyword phrases of 3 or more keywords converts better than one keyword for sales.   Looking further down our keyword list, we see the keyword toys magnetics has much less competition but generates 22,200 searches.  This is an example of a niche in the toy market.

I’m not saying you should rush off and create a website for the magnetic toys niche, but if you are interested in this category, you should see this as a positive result that you should continue to dig into further.

I was watching TV last night and seen an advertisement to purchase a computer for “low WEEKLY payments of $29.95″.  This commercial was targeted directly at consumers that are having financial difficulties.  Now if you take the “low” weekly payment of $29.95 and multiply it by 4, that gives you $119.80/monthly.  Quick research tells me I can buy a decent, inexpensive computer at Best Buy or Tiger Direct for under $500.  If a person were to save just $25 per week for 5 months, they could walk into the store and purchase a better computer for less than what they will ultimately pay over the life of the low weekly payment contract they’ll be locked into with this commercial.   $25.00 per week doesn’t sound so unreasonable does it? But if you purchase from these people, you’ll be paying well over $1000 for a computer that is probably worth $200.  Doesn’t sound so great this way does it?

I don’t know about you, but this fries my cakes because it preys on consumers that really do not know any better.  They think that like the commercial, they’ll be able to start their own home based business as soon as the computer arrives.  You and I both know that is not reality but that’s the reality the commercial projects.    HOWEVER, I must give this company it’s props because it is a smart niche market that is probably extremely profitable for the company.

Niche businesses are not a new idea.  I myself have owned and sold several profitable niche businesses over the past few years.  Right now, I have 2 niche businesses in the swimming pool market.  My wholesale pool toy and gift site is USAPoolToy.com and my retail site for outdoor toys is NewCoolToysOnline.com.  Both are niche businesses in larger markets.  For example, toys is searched more than 45,500,000 times per month and cover a range of products considered to be “toys”.  Creating a website of toys may sound like a fun idea but realistically, how long is it going to take you to get on the first page of Google for the search term “toys”  FOREVER!  Now if you break your website down into smaller categories under toys like I did for NewCoolToysOnline.com, you will see that outdoor toys is still searched close to 1,000,000 times per month but my strategy is to go after the supporting long tail keywords to get my site on the first page of Google for several search results.

The same thing for my wholesale website.  If you search for wholesale toys or wholesale pool toys, you will see my website is #1 on Google.   If I would have just concentrated on the term “wholesale”, it would have taken me months to get the same search engine rankings.
