What exactly is a momtrepreneur?  It’s okay if you’ve never heard of this term as it’s relatively new but chances are you already know a momtrepreneur.  A momtrepreneur is a mom who not only has a family, but has a successful business too!

This is the woman that is able to help out at school doings, drive the car pool yet always seems to have it together.  How does she do this?  Momtrepreneurs are especially talented at multitasking.  These are the women that you see checking their emails on their Blackberry while waiting to pick up their kids.  These woman are not only the best multitaskers, they are also very dedicated to balancing family and business and are some of the most successful woman that I have ever met.

How do you become a momtrepreneur?  Do you want to be able to schedule your day around your children?  I wish I could have done that when my children were younger but I have successfully been able to do this for the past 5 years.  Now my oldest daughter is a senior at FSU and my younger daughter is a senior at the local high school.  When my children were younger, it wasn’t so easy to start a business outside of selling makeup or other products people didn’t really want.

What did I do?  I found a niche business that enabled me to quickly build a business in the wedding industry selling wedding favors then later wedding jewelry.  I have since sold both of these businesses and several others for nice chunks of change.  You see, I like to build the business but when the business gets to the point that it’s taking up so much of my time that it’s time to hire employees, I decide that it’s time to sell it and stash some of the money and reinvest some of the money into a new business.  Today, I own a wholesale toy and wholesale gift business along with an online outdoor toy store and we warehouse inventory.    You may want to build a business like mine that you will own the rest of your life, hiring employees, and handling inventory.   It’s really your choice.

BUT, before you go further, decide what it is you really want out of your business.  Do you want to be involved 100% in the day to day operations or will you be okay with hiring a virtual assistant as your front line person?  Do you want to inventory or do you want to drop ship the merchandise from your supplier to your customer?

Many are asking what is a “niche” market business?  A niche market is a very targeted portion of a larger market.  For example, jewelry is a very large market but bridal jewelry is a targeted niche in this large market.  Another example would be toys.  The childrens toy market is positively huge but smaller niche markets would be pool toys, outdoor toys, beach toys.  This can be applied to any market.

How to start?  For me the easiest way to start researching a market is to begin with something I am interested in.  Do you have a hobby?  Are you involved with clubs?  If you research something to begin with that you are interested in, the process is much more enjoyable and will lay the foundation for your future niche businesses.

Let’s say your hobby is bowling.  A down and dirty way to find a niche within the bowling market is to use Google’s Adwords Keyword Tools.   Enter in to the search box the keyword bowling and you will see that over 7,000,000 people search for this term every month.  This beginning keyword will be difficult for a new website to attain quick rankings.  However as you page down and look at the many keywords available for this market, you will see bowling products with 4,400 searches or bowling accessory with 2,400 searches.

So what does this mean to you?  It means that the niche keywords you’ve found under the main keyword of bowling have enough searches to justify further research.

Take some time and use the Google keyword tool and enter different search terms to see how many people are searching for something you’re already involved in.  You may have just found your niche business market.

The quickest way to go from 0 to profitable is by focusing on a niche product.  What is a niche product?  A niche product is a product specifically targeting a small market.  Examples are wedding favors in the monstrous wedding industry; men’s jewelry in the jewelry category; children’s golf clubs in the golf club category.

How can you locate a niche product to create your business around?  You do niche market research.  The simplest way to begin is to go to Google Keyword Tool and enter the most basic term to see what other keywords come up.  If you are interested in the toy market, enter toys as the main keyword to start your search.  You’re specifically looking for a keyword that generates at least 500 visits with low competition.   In this example, we find 30,400,000 searches for the keyword toy.  We know that keyword phrases of 3 or more keywords converts better than one keyword for sales.   Looking further down our keyword list, we see the keyword toys magnetics has much less competition but generates 22,200 searches.  This is an example of a niche in the toy market.

I’m not saying you should rush off and create a website for the magnetic toys niche, but if you are interested in this category, you should see this as a positive result that you should continue to dig into further.

I was watching TV last night and seen an advertisement to purchase a computer for “low WEEKLY payments of $29.95″.  This commercial was targeted directly at consumers that are having financial difficulties.  Now if you take the “low” weekly payment of $29.95 and multiply it by 4, that gives you $119.80/monthly.  Quick research tells me I can buy a decent, inexpensive computer at Best Buy or Tiger Direct for under $500.  If a person were to save just $25 per week for 5 months, they could walk into the store and purchase a better computer for less than what they will ultimately pay over the life of the low weekly payment contract they’ll be locked into with this commercial.   $25.00 per week doesn’t sound so unreasonable does it? But if you purchase from these people, you’ll be paying well over $1000 for a computer that is probably worth $200.  Doesn’t sound so great this way does it?

I don’t know about you, but this fries my cakes because it preys on consumers that really do not know any better.  They think that like the commercial, they’ll be able to start their own home based business as soon as the computer arrives.  You and I both know that is not reality but that’s the reality the commercial projects.    HOWEVER, I must give this company it’s props because it is a smart niche market that is probably extremely profitable for the company.

Niche businesses are not a new idea.  I myself have owned and sold several profitable niche businesses over the past few years.  Right now, I have 2 niche businesses in the swimming pool market.  My wholesale pool toy and gift site is USAPoolToy.com and my retail site for outdoor toys is NewCoolToysOnline.com.  Both are niche businesses in larger markets.  For example, toys is searched more than 45,500,000 times per month and cover a range of products considered to be “toys”.  Creating a website of toys may sound like a fun idea but realistically, how long is it going to take you to get on the first page of Google for the search term “toys”  FOREVER!  Now if you break your website down into smaller categories under toys like I did for NewCoolToysOnline.com, you will see that outdoor toys is still searched close to 1,000,000 times per month but my strategy is to go after the supporting long tail keywords to get my site on the first page of Google for several search results.

The same thing for my wholesale website.  If you search for wholesale toys or wholesale pool toys, you will see my website is #1 on Google.   If I would have just concentrated on the term “wholesale”, it would have taken me months to get the same search engine rankings.

Sit down and really think about what you would LIKE to sell on your website then bookmark this page because we’ll be going into further detail on how to research your niche business idea.
